PIPS 1

pips1

A few weeks ago, I went on PIPS 1. That was good too, the best bit was how to manage confrontation. The activists amongst you would have loved the role play! The session was good for me. We learnt how to deal with passive aggression - and let me tell you some of those guys needed it!!

Generic SpR Teaching Course

Hey DUDES!!

spr teaching

Just got back from the generic training course today. (Had to fight my way through the bloody traffic coming back from Nottingham). It was called "Focus on the Participant as Learner". The course was pretty interesting - learning about learning styles.

Apparently, I'm a combination of a Theorist, a Pragmatist and a Reflector, but a low Activist. Those with high Activist scores were anaesthetists and surgeons (surprise, surprise!). This was the first session only - the next will be on the 20th June. See ya there!!.

ADDED 20th June: Just did the second day of "Focus on Participant as Learner". The most important thing that I picked up was about coaching styles and the continuum between instructive and facilitative learning. This can be extrapolated to teaching in small and large groups. Did I find it useful? Hmmm, I'll get back to you on that one ...

Skyscape products for PocketPC

I was delighted to see that those of you with doctors.net.uk accounts, who also read your bulletins, might notice that all of the relevant skyscape titles for UK doctors were mentioned recently. Well, co-incidently, I happen to have all of them! Anyone local who is interested in obtaining these titles, just leave your comments below.

By the way, I find it so convenient! No more carrying loads of text books crammed into my pockets like during my house officer years. I now have a virtual library of ebooks on my Dell Axim pda clipped neatly to my belt! (Feeling very smug now...)

*****
MedicalPocketPC is a useful site. The Sanford Guide is an essential part of microbiology. Everyone should have Epocrates.

Generic SpR training in Leicester

In addition to my training as a microbiologist, specialist registrars in the LNR region also have to to take part in training sessions/workshops aimed at all trainee registrars in any discipline. These generic training courses usually take place at Nottingham. I've signed up to a few for the next few months. I will provide some feedback on them after each attendance.

I've heard from my colleagues that some of the training courses are good (e.g. Focus on the Participant as Learner/Teacher), whilst others (e.g ethics/stats) are not so good. Any comments/reviews can be submitted below. Thanks.

My current reference texts

I started on "Lecture notes on Medical Microbiology" - a simple book, but for me this was a good place to start!

1) Greenwood is the standard learners text for microbiology. I purchased my copy from Tesco by redeeming my shopping vouchers and it was free delivery, so got it fairly cheaply.

greenwood recommended text

2) Mandell is the "bible" of microbiology. Good as a reference book but pricey @ ~£300. Access to the website is via www.ppidonline.com. The website is updated regularly with up to date research.

3) www.nejm.com is always a good choice. The backdoor is here.

4) The 16th edition of Harrisons online. Again the backdoor is here.

5) Don't forget UpToDate, CDC & HPA.

6) Accessmedicine. u: ankosdeu p: medicine

Hope this helps,

AMH.

P.S. for those random PPC lovers: aximsite, pocketpcparadise and PDAonline can be found here.

Some Points of Discussion

Here are are few thoughts of what I want to discuss:

1) Clinical Microbiology (MSc)

2) Presentation of posters/original articles at regional/national meetings

3) Quantiferon (hey, anyone else keen to buy shares in CELESTIS?)

4) Anyone studying for MRCPath1

Later,

AMH.

Welcome

Hello and welcome to my blog.  The idea behind this was to start a blog for micro trainees in the LNR region, so we can discuss ideas, research etc. I will be sending out invites later this week.    AMH.
