RCPath Bulletin - July 2006

I've just had a quick look at this months publication and I have noticed a special emphasis of medical microbiology and virology. The first article discusses the structure of training and the new curriculum adopted by PMETB in September 2005. This document is avaliable on the RCPath website.  The key points however are familiar to those of us already in training and include 3-4 days whole time service provision, up to 1 in 5 on calls (luckily pathology doesn't lend itself to shift patterns) and emphasis on DGH vs teaching hospital experience. The waters are still murky when it comes to the "modernising medical careers" issue, and I'm keen to see how the new recommendations are implemented locally. I have to admit that I'm glad I've got an "old-fashioned" national training number (NTN), with a defined certificate of completion of specialist training (CCST) at the end. I think in all areas this FY1/FY2 business plus the loss of the SpR grade will cause confusion!

The other article that caught me eye looked at the results of a national training survey. I do remember filling this in about 4 months ago, but I never really thought of how my experiences compared with others. Several interesting points were made:

  • only 30% of SpRs have done a sustained period of research prior to entering the rotation
  • respondees felt that they would prefer a short period of research (3-12 months) rather than an MD or PhD.
  • experinces differ widely between regions.

This article also suggests that trainee's performance should be analysed quantitatively. I think that the shortage of clinical microbiologists and virologists is unlikely to improve in the near future, and as a result a balance will need to be drawn in the time training takes. Having said that, they are many new and exciting fields of R&D in microbiology (e.g. molecular diagnostics) that will require adequate levels of suitably qualified staff, time and most importantly of all, funding.

Dear Friends it was a great

Dear Friends
it was a great feeling when I saw Prof Philip Quirke who is supposed be the architect of these taining schools in those chilly winter days at Apollo hospital in NewDelhi, 2005. I dreamt of becoming like him one day and started my ill fated journey towards UK with great expectations. I started to visualise the other side of the life within days of landing here. However my great belief in the schools system drived me to call up the consultants day after day tirelesly for an attachment. They turned down my request in a way which is unbelievble as most of you know. testking 000-974 Finally my persevrance paid off one day. I started an attachement which was the only positive outcome of my misadventure. At this stage, I read a book by name 'The Hidden Rules Of English Behaviour ' by Kate Fox. I suggest everyone to read that amazing book. My preparation also took a turn by becoming well stuctured and orientated. I was beaming with confidence without ever realising the unpleasant surprises. testking 642-973 As all of you know, high level drama since the applications were out. I guess, nobody would have thought off in their wildest dreams about the hidden agenda which was beyond anyone's imagination and comprehension. I never realised that I would be victim of this process as most of us. I feel, prof Philip Quirke would be disturbed by this unprecednted turn of events drawing widespread creticisms/ discontent among us. It would be intersting to see Dr Kevin West article in next bulletin about histopathology recruitment. Dr Patrick Gallagher must have been surprised about the way we have been treated. testking 1z0-007 Anyway it's difficult to believe anyone in these suspicious circumstances. Congrats to all those who have made it. For those who were supposed to unsuccessful, I don't know what to say? I wish all the best for your next endeavour. I learnt a lot with this misadventure of mine at high cost. As someone in the forum rightly pointed out that ' you grow in difficult times'.
My dream of becoming like........

goodbye
