Microbiology:

  • Yellow pigmented
  • Non-fermenting
  • Non-spore forming
  • Gram negative
  • Rod shaped
  • Single polar flagellum with slow mobility (hence the name)
    • Few cells demonstrate motility in culture
  • Commonest species found in human clinical specimens

Distribution:

  • Wide (soil and water)
  • Community aquired and nosocomial infections:
    • Bacteraemia
    • CRBSI
    • meningitis
    • cutaneous infections
    • peritonitis (in the community with long-term CAPD)
    • visceral abscesses
    • UTIs
    • Adenitis
    • Diarrhoea

Nosocomial Infections:

  • Contaminated hospital equipment
  • Indwelling catheters
  • Infected irrigation solutions/haemodialysis fluids

Identification:

  • Strictly aerobic
  • Oxidase positive (~90% of strains)
  • Catalase positive
  • Yellow pigmented colonies on blood agar
  • Slow growing
  • Small colonies isolated at 24 hrs
  • Optimal growth @ 30oC, some at 37oC, nothing at 42oC
  • Esculin-hydrolysis (+)
  • Inhibited by a 30μg vancomycin disk.

Susceptibility:

  • Most strains are susceptible to:
    • tetracycline
    • chloramphenicol
    • septrin
    • aminoglycosides
  • Variable susceptibility:
    • all other agents
    • fluroquinolones

Other Uses:

  • Decomposers of aromatic compounds
  • Used for bioremediation and decontamination
  • Decomposition of plastic shopping bags (60%)
