CL3 & CL4

Microorganisms may be classified by the severity of the disease that they cause:

  1. "Category 1" organisms (and viruses) are most unlikely to cause human disease, except in the most highly compromised of people. Most microroganisms fall into this category.
  2. "Category 2"may cause human disease and may pose an increased threat of infection to people who handle them. They are unlikely to spread throughout a community and preventative measures and treatment of the infections that they cause are available. Examples include Staphylococcus aureus and most strains of Escherichia coli.
  3. "Category 3" organisms (and viruses) cause severe human disease and present a serious threat of infection to people handling them. They may spread throughout the community although preventative measures are usually available, as is treatment for certain infections. Examples include hepatitis B virus, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Escherichia coli O157.
  4. "Category 4" organisms (and viruses) cause severe human disease and present a serious threat of infection to people handling them. They may spread throughout the community. There are usually no preventative measures or treatments with which to control infections by these agents.

Examples include [organisms (and viruses)]:

  • Ebola
  • Viral Haemorrhagic Fever
  • Rabies
  • SHV (simian herpes virus)
  • SARS
  • Anthrax
