Calymmatobacterium granulomatis
- Encapsulated pleomorphic GNB.
- Causes an STD (Granuloma inguinale) = DONOVANOSIS.
- Low infectivity.
- Small papules appear leading to an indurated nodule in 8-80 days. This then forms a beefy granulomatous ulcer, the leisons may coalese and then heal leading to severe deformity.
- Smears of the leisons demonstrate Donovan Bodies (Intracellular Organisms).
- Intracellular in the vacuoles of the cytoplasm in a large number of cells, cells have pilli like projections on the surface.
- Rx: Tetracyclines.
