Calymmatobacterium granulomatis

  • Encapsulated pleomorphic GNB.
  • Causes an STD (Granuloma inguinale) = DONOVANOSIS.
    • Low infectivity.
  • Small papules appear leading to an indurated nodule in 8-80 days. This then forms a beefy granulomatous ulcer, the leisons may coalese and then heal leading to severe deformity.
  • Smears of the leisons demonstrate Donovan Bodies (Intracellular Organisms).
    • Intracellular in the vacuoles of the cytoplasm in a large number of cells, cells have pilli like projections on the surface.
  • Rx: Tetracyclines.
