Basically both are:

  • Gm (-)
  • Curved rods
  • microaerophillic ie need 5% oxygen with 5-10% CO2
  • Grow well of chocolate agar, slightly haemolytic
  • Colonies may be translucent grey.
  • Both are oxidase (+)
  • For Helicobacter spp.:
  • H. pylori organisms occur primarily in mucus and adjacent to epithelial cells at the mucosal surface and in gastric pits. H. pylori does not invade the inside of gastric epithelial cells or cause disease in ectopic locations.
