What is it?

A novel treatment for catheter related bloodstream infections (CRBSIs). It contains Taurolidine & Citrate. Taurolidine is a potent, biocompatible, antimicrobial agent with low resistance frequencies.

How does it work?

It has a novel mechanism of action. This agent is a derivative of the amino acid taurine. Methylol derivatives interact with components of bacterial cell walls resulting in irreparable injury. Taurolidine also appears to have immunoregulatory properties, blunting lipopolysaccharide-induced tumor necrosis factor and interleukin-1 release from human peripheral blood mononuclear cells and also reducing adherence ofbacteria to human epithelial cells in vitro.

Any other uses?

No. Taurolidine and its metabolites appeared not to reach the MICs against many microbes, it was felt that the role would be in topical, IP or line locking use. (REF)

Currently it is being trialed in permcaths, as a preventative measure.
